چکیده

[1] Results of a single-blind round-robin comparison of satellite primary productivity algorithms are presented. The goal of the round-robin exercise was to determine the accuracy of the algorithms in predicting depth-integrated primary production from information amenable to remote sensing. Twelve algorithms, developed by 10 teams, were evaluated by comparing their ability to estimate depth-integrated daily production (IP, mg C m ) at 89 stations in geographically diverse provinces. Algorithms were furnished information about the surface chlorophyll concentration, temperature, photosynthetic available radiation, latitude, longitude, and day of the year. Algorithm results were then compared with IP estimates derived from C uptake measurements at the same stations. Estimates from the best-performing algorithms were generally within a factor of 2 of the C-derived estimates. Many algorithms had systematic biases that can possibly be eliminated by reparameterizing underlying relationships. The performance of the algorithms and degree of correlation with each other were independent of the algorithms’ complexity.

Mining a Sea of Data: Deducing the Environmental Controls of Ocean Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll biomass in the surface ocean is regulated by a complex interaction of physiological, oceanographic, and ecological factors and in turn regulates the rates of primary production and export of organic carbon to the deep ocean. Mechanistic models of phytoplankton responses to climate change require the parameterization of many processes of which we have limited knowledge. We develop a ...

Primary Production: Sensitivity to Surface Irradiance and Implications for Archiving Data

An equation is derived to express the sensitivity of daily, watercolumn production by phytoplankton in the ocean to variations in irradiance at the sea surface. Assuming no spectral effects, and a vertically uniform chlorophyll profile, the sensitivity is a function only of the dimensionless irradiance. Spectral effects can be accounted for as a function of the chlorophyll concentration. At the...

Comparison of the Performance of Geographically Weighted Regression and Ordinary Least Squares for modeling of Sea surface temperature in Oman Sea

In Marine discussions, the study of sea surface temperature (SST) and study of its spatial relationships with other ocean parameters are of particular importance, in such a way that the accurate recognition of the SST relationships with other parameters allows the study of many ocean and atmospheric processes. Therefore, in this study, spatial relations modeling of SST with Surface Wind Speed (...

Directional and Spectral Irradiance in Ocean Models: Effects on Simulated Global Phytoplankton, Nutrients, and Primary Production

The importance of including directional and spectral light in simulations of ocean radiative transfer was investigated using a coupled biogeochemical-circulation-radiative model of the global oceans. The effort focused on phytoplankton abundances, nutrient concentrations and vertically-integrated net primary production. The importance was approached by sequentially removing directional (i.e., d...

Evaluating the effect of interannual variations of surface chlorophyll on upper ocean temperature

[1] An important issue in modeling and predicting upper ocean variability is the nature of the interactions between ocean biology, ocean dynamics, and irradiance penetration. Numerous studies using in situ observations and model simulations to investigate the effects of biota on light penetration have demonstrated that this biological-physical feedback may be significant over a wide range of sp...
